The governor of Borno, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has in his second day in office taken a tour of the state secretariat at 8:00 am to find out if civil servants have reported to work. The governor who was at the Musa Usman Secretariat Friday morning however found out out that must of the civil servants are not on their seats between 8:00 am and 9:30 am when he went round checking. YERWA EXPRESS NEWS reports that the head of service was himself absent as at 9 am when the governor checked on his office. Prof. Zulum only yesterday ordered the commencement of payment of all outstanding salaries and pensions to serving and retired civil servants before June 3. He has variously stated during his campaign that he will be ruthless in dealing with indiscipline particularly as it obtains in the ministries. In one of his interactions with the academic community of the University of Maiduguri in January, Zulum said ‘we have to fix the civil service and instill discipline, our biggest problem is indiscipline.’ ‘I am aware that this is fasting period, but I can understand if you find at least even 2 % percent attendance. ‘It is only in the Ministry of Justice where we met four people and one in the Ministry of Environment,’ the governor lamented while at the secretariat. He ordered that the list of all civil servants who are absent be taken down. He however did not state what will follow after that.
