About a decade ago the heat of the insurgency largely began in Maiduguri, the Capital city of Borno State. Before this unfortunate incident that has paralysed the State with fear and terror, Maiduguri used to an epitome of peace and has been worthy of it slogan, “Home of Peace”. Not too long ago when the civilian volunteers joined the fight against the insurgent, there have been a tremendous success in restoring peace in Maiduguri. The violence and endless attacks has so far, monumentally reduced to the barest minimum. Only that some local government areas are yet to recovered from the blows of the insurgency.
Efforts by the state government, International NGOs and local NGOs have also intensively promoted and encouraged unity and peaceful coexistence. Active youth engagement and advocacy as a measure to prevent and counter extremist narratives in the state has been a success story. Today people in the state can move freely at night without the fear of any attack. Businesses are now operating like never before. The night life is back. The nightly activities are now seen in every part of the capital. Children skating and playing under the bright streetlights. The influx of people from other part of the country and from other nation is minding blowing. The number of traffic experience daily at every corner of the State, especially during the evening hours when people are returning home from work. All these are attestation that peace in Borno is growing at an astonishing rate.
