Welfare of IDPs: Challenges facing World Bank's interventions reviewed as Governor Kashim Shettima

Some problems slowing down interventions by the World Bank in Borno State, were on Friday reviewed with strategies developed to ensure a speedy and hitch free implementation of programs towards improving the welfare of internally displaced persons. The review followed Governor Kashim Shettima's visit to the Wo‎rld Bank's country office on Friday in Abuja.

Accompanied by the Commissioner of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement, Prof. Babagana Umara, the Governor met officials of the World Bank led by the country director for Nigeria and also coordinating director for West Africa Regional Integration Program, Mr. Rachid Benmessaoud for a high level review.

Before their discussions, Governor Shettima first thanked the Bank for interventions through funding of the FADAMA project for agriculture, Youth Employment and Social Support Operation (YESSO) project, the Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP) amongst others.

Going into a review, both parties identified challenges hindering particular interventions by the World Bank. After deliberations that lasted a long duration, some urgent measures were resolved on how to fast track the implementation of different programmes that include FADAMA project for agriculture, Youth Employment and Social Support Operation which will involve conditional cash transfers to two hundred thousand households and Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project. Discussions over General Hospital Rann in Kala-Balge local government area was also held.

The meeting also agreed that henceforth the Bank will hold a monthly meeting with Governor Kashim Shettima for the purpose reviewing successes and challenges.

As show of commitment to the resolutions reached,Governor Kashim Shettima gave out his direct telephone line, requesting the World Bank Officials to shun bureaucratic bottlenecks by contacting him directly in case of any hiccups.

‎The World Bank Meeting had in attendance team members and focal persons of different interventions planned by the Bank as well as some specialists in social protection and consultants.
